Infection Control

Clients
Careful personal hygiene and household cleanliness are helpful in preventing the spread of disease. Simple ways to keep safe:

Maintain Good Personal Hygiene
Wash the body every day.
Wash hair at least weekly.
Brush teeth and rinse mouth after each meal and at bedtime.
Trim fingernails/toenails weekly.
Cover mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
Avoid sharing personal articles (razors, combs, toothbrushes).
Wash Hands Frequently
Wash hands before you prepare, eat, or serve food.
Wash hands after using the toilet, blowing or wiping your nose, and outside activities.
Thorough hand washing tips:
Wet hands with plenty of soap and warm water.
Work up a lather over hands and wrists.
Rub the palm of one hand over the back of the other and rub them together several times.
Repeat for the other hand.
Interlace fingers of both hands, rubbing them back and forth
Clean under fingernails with a nail brush or manicure stick.
Rinse hands thoroughly under warm running water.
Dry hands/wrists thoroughly with a clean towel.
Clean Your House Thoroughly
Avoid household clutter.
Ventilate home with fresh air.
Clean the kitchen counter with scouring powder.
Dust and vacuum weekly.
Mop kitchen and bathroom floor weekly — whenever spills occur.
Clean the inside of refrigerator weekly with soap and water.
Check dates on food — outdated products may cause disease/illness.
Add a teaspoon of vinegar per quart of water/saline used for respiratory equipment, humidifiers, etc.
Wear gloves when cleaning litter boxes, aquariums, bird cages, etc.

Clean Contaminated Equipment Thoroughly

Scrub medical equipment with a 70% alcohol solution or solution of one part bleach to10 parts water.
Clean soap dishes, denture cups, etc. weekly.
